Tainai is the largest ski area in the Kaetsu district of northern Niigata, spread over a mountainside between the Tainai and Kanomata rivers. Opened by the former Kurokawa village in 1964, it is now run by a company owned by Tainai City. Its thirteen runs lean toward intermediate skiers, with long cruising trails of over two kilometres, a 35-degree challenge slope and some moguls and ungroomed terrain. The Chibikko Park has a snow escalator and a sledding area for young children, and there is night skiing on Fridays, weekends and holidays. It is about 25 minutes from the Nakajo IC and an hour from Niigata City, with a large free car park.
