Mt. Hokari
母狩山
Tsuruoka, Yamagata · Elevation 751 m
Mt. Hokari (751 m) rises in eastern Tsuruoka City, in the northern part of the Maya-san range in Yamagata Prefecture, and is counted among the Yamagata 100 and Michinoku 120 mountain lists. Its name is traced to a legend that the brothers Abe no Sadatō and Munetō, defeated in the Former Nine Years' War, climbed the mountain searching for their mother. The granite ridge it shares with Mt. Maya and Mt. Yunosawa makes it one of the so-called Five Elder Peaks, with traverse routes between them. The standard Yachisada Course follows the Yachisada River from a sabō dam, passes the Takamidai overlook above the Shōnai Plain, and finishes on the ridge connecting to Mt. Kinpu.
