Mt. Gongenmori

Mt. Gongen-mori (314 m) rises in the Imozawa district of Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, and its roughly 200-hectare natural forest is listed as no. 2 in Sendai's "100 Green Landmarks." Dense stands of Japanese red pine, witch hazel and konara oak shelter abundant birds and small mammals, with several gentle hiking trails leading to the summit in about an hour. The name traces to the Matsuo Gongen shrine on the southern peak, enshrined by retainers of the Kokubun clan in the late Muromachi period, and the top offers views of Mt. Izumi-ga-take and as far as the Zaō range.
