Mt. Banzan

A 356-meter satoyama on the western edge of Sendai City, forming a low ridge of three peaks — Banzan (356 m), Naraibanzan (373 m) and Jadaibanzan (366 m) — that straddles the boundary between Aoba and Taihaku wards. The mountain is associated with Zen master Ungo Kiyō, who founded nearby Daibaiji temple in the early Edo period; a Kaizan-dō at the summit enshrines wooden figures from a legend in which the priest and bow-wielding brothers drove off tengu attacking the temple. Designated one of Sendai's 100 Green Landmarks, the well-trodden beginner trails climb from Daibaiji and other trailheads in about an hour. Listed in the Bunken Tozan Guide for Miyagi.
