Mount Poroshiri is the highest peak of the Hidaka range at 2,052 m, straddling the towns of Biratori and Niikappu in southern Hokkaido. The name comes from the Ainu Poro-sir ("large mountain"), and the peak is famous for the three great cirques on its northeast face and for its alpine flower communities. It is one of the Hyakumeizan and is widely regarded as the most difficult of the hundred to climb. The standard Nukabira-gawa route involves more than ten river crossings, the access forest road is closed to private vehicles, and climbers must use the shuttle bus operated from Toyonuka-sansō by the town of Biratori, restricting the practical season to roughly late June through the end of September.
