Mount Meakan is a 1,499 m active stratovolcano in Akan-Mashu National Park, southwest of Lake Akan in eastern Hokkaido. The highest of a complex of ten peaks, it is also called Ponmachineshiri, meaning “small female mountain” in Ainu. Fumaroles rise from craters near the summit. Alpine plants such as Meakan-kinbai and Meakan-fusuma flower in early summer; the usual hiking season runs from June through autumn. The main approaches start at Meakan Onsen and Onneto, and carrying a helmet is recommended. Volcanic activity can restrict access. As of October 2026, Alert Level 2 applies, with restrictions around Ponmachineshiri Crater.
