Mount Katsuro

葛老山

A 1,123.7-meter peak in the Yunishigawa Onsen area of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, rising between the Oukai and Yunishi tributaries of the Kinugawa River. The mountain entered Japanese historical record after the Tenwa Nikko earthquake of 1683 collapsed its eastern flank into the Oukai River, creating Gojuri Lake by natural dam. The trail starts from the parking lot of the Michi-no-Eki Yunishigawa, beside Yunishigawa-Onsen Station on the Yagan Railway, and the round trip takes about three and a half hours; figures of the Seven Lucky Gods rendered as kappa river spirits punctuate the route. The peak is included among the Tochigi Hundred Famous Mountains.
