Mount Horowa

保呂羽山

Mount Horowa is a 438 m isolated peak in Omori, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, on the northern Dewa Hills. The summit holds the main hall of Haushiwake Shrine, said to date from 757 (Tenpyo Hoji 1) and listed in the Engishiki, marking the mountain as a long-established centre of Shugendo and mountain worship. Sites along the pilgrim path include the palanquin stop, women's worship hall and Komori stone, and the Shimotsuki Kagura performed here is a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property over 1,200 years old. Old-growth beech and oak forests have earned the mountain prefectural natural environment status, and it is listed in the Akita Bunken Tozan Guide.
