Mount Hiru
蛭ヶ岳
Sagamihara, Kanagawa · Elevation 1,673 m
Mount Hiru is a 1,672.7 m peak on the borders of Sagamihara, Yamakita, and Kiyokawa in Kanagawa, the highest summit of the Tanzawa range and of Kanagawa Prefecture. It stands at the heart of the Tanzawa-Ōyama Quasi-National Park, with its summit ridge — cloaked in old-growth beech forest — designated a special protection zone. The summit commands a 360-degree panorama taking in Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, Sagami Bay, and the Kanto Plain, and is also known by the historic name Yakushi-dake. Hirugatake Sansō, the year-round hut operated by the Kita-Tanzawa Mountain Center, sits just below the summit; every approach is a five- to seven-hour climb, and the peak features in Shin-Nihon Hyakumeizan, Kantō Hyakumeizan, and many other lists.
