Mount Azōji

Mount Azōji (1,263.2 m) stands at the western edge of the Nishi-Chūgoku Mountains Quasi-National Park where Masuda City, Tsuwano Town and Yoshika Town meet in Shimane Prefecture; it is the highest peak in Shimane that does not lie on a prefectural border. Cloaked in old-growth beech forest, its summit looks out as far as Mount Ishizuchi in Shikoku on clear days. Four trailheads — Okutani (Tsuwano), Iharadani (Masuda), Gogi-no-Sato (Yoshika) and Azōji Tunnel — give access to the peak, which is included in the Hundred Mountains of the Chūgoku region.
