Kumotori-Sanso Lodge

Lodge on a small spur about 700m — some twenty minutes — below the summit of Kumotoriyama (2,017m), the highest peak in Tokyo, on the way down the Mitsumine route, and standing right on the Tokyo–Saitama boundary. It lies near the centre of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park where the main approaches converge: the Mitsumine route from Mitsumine Shrine in Saitama, the Kamosawa route from Okutama in Tokyo, and the Sanjo route from Sanjo-no-yu in Yamanashi. The two-storey wooden building was rebuilt in October 1999 and opens year-round. Stays are by reservation, in private rooms or in men's and women's shared rooms, with bedding provided. The entrance faces south towards the sunrise, and in clear weather the lights of Tokyo are visible at night. The flush toilet in front of the lodge is open to anyone in summer; in winter a second flush toilet is reached from inside. There is a cooking room for self-caterers, and the campsite needs no booking — you sign in at the lodge. Payment is cash only.
