Wakkanai City Park Ski Area Closed
Official name 稚内市公園スキー場
Hokkaido
Open 1978–2006
Wakkanai City Park Ski Area was a municipal ski hill inside Wakkanai Park, on the hill overlooking central Wakkanai. Opened in 1978, it was used by the city's schools for ski lessons. The road up to the park closed in winter, so skiers usually rode the short Wakkanai Park Ropeway to its top station and walked on from there. On clear days the slopes looked out to Rishiri, Rebun and Sakhalin. Its ski jump was dismantled in 1999, and in its last years a single pair lift ran. Ageing facilities led to its closure in March 2006, the same month the ropeway shut. Everything was removed in 2007 and the site has returned to open grassland.
