Mt. Moriyoshi Ani Ski Resort trail map
Mt. Moriyoshi Ani Ski Resort, a city-run area in Kitaakita, Akita, is best known for its juhyo snow monsters, counted among Japan's three great rime-ice forests. A 3.5 km gondola climbs to the summit station, and from January to March the Juhyo-daira viewing area, five minutes' walk away, is ringed by giant frosted trees, with boots and snowshoes on loan. Deep snow brings frequent powder across five runs, including the 2.8 km Paradise run from top to base and an ungroomed Challenge run. Backcountry trips are allowed after filing a plan, and on winter nights a snowcat carries visitors up to see the lit-up snow monsters at Juhyo-daira. The season runs from mid-December to late March plus April weekends, about an hour from Odate-Noshiro Airport.
