Mt. Yōgai

Mt. Yōgai — also known as Mt. Tema-Yōgai or Mt. Tema — is a 331.7 m peak in the Terauchi area of Nanbu Town in Tottori's Saihaku County. It is identified with 'Hōki-no-kuni-no-Tema-no-Yamamoto', the setting of the Kojiki myth in which Ōkuninushi was crushed by a heated boulder rolled down by his elder brothers and later revived; the Aka-iiwa Shrine at the foot of the mountain is venerated as the site of his resurrection. A separate Aka-i (red boar) shrine once stood at the summit, but in 1920 it was merged into Kusei-no-miya to form the present Aka-iiwa Shrine. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period the mountain also hosted Tema-Yōgai-jō, a fortress of the Mōri clan, and the peak is listed in the Tottori Mountain Guide.
