Mt. Shakadake
釈迦岳
Hita, Oita · Elevation 1,230 m
Mt. Shaka-dake is a 1,229.53 m peak on the boundary between Yabe-mura in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture and Hita City, Ōita Prefecture, the highest summit in Fukuoka Prefecture. Also called Hon-Shaka or Shaka-ga-take, its summit carries a first-class triangulation point and an enshrined statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The southern slope gives striking views of autumn colour and the Ohata-gawa Gorge, while the lower trail passes a notable natural stand of golden-surprise lilies. From the Fukuoka side a short walk of about 40 minutes climbs from the prefectural-boundary trailhead reached via the Hikyō Soma-no-sato river park, and a longer traverse extends to neighbouring Mt. Gozen-dake. The mountain features in the Kyūshū 100 Famous Mountains, the list of highest peaks in each prefecture, the prefectural climbing guides for Fukuoka and Ōita, the New Ōita 100, the Yabe Eight Famous Peaks and several other selections, ranking as the lord of the northern Kyūshū Central Mountains.
