Mt. Gozendake
御前岳
Hita, Oita · Elevation 1,209 m
Mt. Gozen-dake is a 1,209 m peak on the boundary between Yabe-mura in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture and Hita City, Ōita Prefecture, the second-highest summit in Fukuoka Prefecture after the neighbouring Mt. Shaka-dake. Also called Gongen-dake, it carries a stele to Emperor Keikō at its top, and the broad summit offers a 360° panorama, dropping sharply to the south into the Ohata-gawa Gorge. From the Fukuoka side the climb starts from the Hikyō Soma-no-sato river park trailhead, completing a 3-hour loop, with an extended traverse continuing on to Mt. Shaka-dake. The mountain features in the Kyūshū 100 Famous Mountains, the prefectural climbing guides for both Fukuoka and Ōita, the New Ōita 100, the Yabe Eight Famous Peaks and several other selections, and ranks as a representative summit of the northern Kyūshū Central Mountains.
