Mt. Sarukakeyama

A 968 m peak on the border between Yame, Fukuoka and Hita, Oita. It is one of the eight peaks selected by Yame City in 2010 as the Yabe Hachimeizan, representing the former village of Yabe. The trailhead is reached from the Takehara settlement on the route toward Taio in Hita. The name evokes a mountain so remote that monkeys could run freely across it, and local tradition also credits it as a strategic point for halting advancing troops. Cedar groves limit views from the summit itself, but vistas of Takehara and the surrounding ridges reward climbers along the way.
