Mt. Sentsuuzan
船通山
Okuizumo, Shimane / Nichinan, Tottori · Elevation 1,142 m
Mt. Sentsūzan is a 1,142 m peak on the Tottori-Shimane prefectural border between Nichinan Town and Okuizumo Town, lying within Hiba-Dōgo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. Known anciently as Torikami-no-mine, it is the mythological setting where the deity Susano-o slew the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi and where the sacred sword Ame-no-Murakumo (Kusanagi) is said to have emerged, marked today by a stone monument at the summit. The Shimane side offers the Torikami Falls and Kameishi routes through beech forest, while the Tottori side has a steep "fitness" course and gentler general course; late-April to early-May Erythronium dogtooth-violet meadows and a 28 July ceremonial festival are the peak's seasonal highlights.
