Mt. Nandai
難台山
Kasama, Ibaraki · Elevation 553 m
Nandai-san is a 553 m peak on the boundary between Kasama and Ishioka cities in Ibaraki Prefecture, occupying the centre of the north-eastern Tsukuba range. Its northern slope holds one of the southernmost known wild lily-of-the-valley meadows at around 100 m elevation, blooming in mid-May, and the flat summit has a third-class triangulation point and a small shrine altar. The mountain was the site of Nandai-san castle, held by a branch of the Oda clan at the close of the Nanboku-chō period, and the surrounding area is designated Kasama-Aguni-Atago Prefectural Natural Park. It appears in 'Mountains of Ibaraki' (the prefectural climbing guide), the Kanto 100 Famous Mountains, the Kasama Ten Mountains and several Kantō-region hiking selections, and forms the centrepiece of the popular Atago–Nandai–Aguni 'Kasama Alps' traverse.
