Mt. Jouyama

Jōyama (498 m) rises over the northwestern districts of Tosu in Saga Prefecture. It was crowned by Katsuo Castle, stronghold of the Tsukushi clan who held sway over eastern Hizen, Chikuzen and Chikugo in the Warring States period; with the clan's residence and satellite forts at its foot it is the nationally designated 'Katsuo Castle Tsukushi Clan Site.' A trail climbs from Tsukushi Shrine on the southern slope, and the mountain is the only place in northern Kyushu where the sakura azalea grows wild. It is counted in the Saga prefectural climbing guide.
