Hachiōjiyama is a 378 m peak at the eastern foot of the Hiei mountain range in Sakamoto, Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, also called Ushio-yama or Ko-Hiei. It is the sacred mountain (shintai-zan) of Hiyoshi Taisha, headquarters of more than 3,800 Sannō-faith shrines nationwide. Just below the summit stand the okumiya — Ushio-gū and Sannomiya-gū — flanking the towering megalith Kogane-no-Ōiwa, regarded as the spiritual origin of the shrine. A 1-km, 30-minute stone-and-mountain path from the Hiyoshi precincts leads to the okumiya, traversed at speed by mikoshi during the April Sannō Festival.
