Mount Shiraya

Mount Shiraya is a 1,177-metre summit in the northern part of Kawakami Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, rising above the right bank of Lake Ōtaki-Ryūjin (Ōtaki Dam) as a foothill at the northern fringe of the Ōmine Range. The peak is most often climbed either from the ruins of the abandoned Shiraya hamlet—evacuated entirely after a 2003 landslide triggered during the dam's test impoundment—or from Ashinogo-goe pass to the west, and the upper slopes give views over the reservoir and the Yoshino mountain skyline. It is listed in the Nara prefectural mountain guide (Bunken Tōzan Guide), the 250 Mountains around Ōsaka and the Nara Hyaku-yū-zan selection.
