Mount Ōbira

Mount Ōbira is a 1,190.7 m peak in Shimamaki Village, Hokkaido — a mountain at the northern end of the Oshima Peninsula whose summit and southern ridge expose limestone among the surrounding volcanic rocks and pyroclastics. The northwestern flank still bears the workings of the former Ōbira coal mine; a 1948 extraction plan was abandoned after an avalanche. Designated a Natural Environment Conservation Area under Japanese law, the mountain shows a striking vertical succession from beech forest near the foot — at the northern limit of beech distribution in Japan — through dakekamba birches in the middle to dwarf pine on the ridge. It is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Hokkaido.
