Mount Iwaya

A 281-meter peak (rise of about 230 m) in Urashiro, Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture — one of the four summits of the Shiōji-san cluster centred on Mt. Daijō, straddling Dazaifu, Ōnojō and Umi. The top carries the site of Iwaya Castle, the Sengoku-era stronghold where in 1586 the Ōtomo retainer Takahashi Shōun held off 40,000 Shimazu troops with only some 700 men for two weeks, his garrison fighting to the last in the honmaru. The honmaru ruins now command sweeping views over central Dazaifu and rank among Japan's "100 Night-View Mountains." Listed in the Fukuoka Ultra-Low Mountains.
