Mount Iwaki

Mount Iwaki is the highest peak in Aomori Prefecture, a 1,624 m stratovolcano rising as a free-standing cone over the Tsugaru Plain. Its graceful form has earned it the name "Tsugaru Fuji," and it has long been an object of mountain worship, with Iwakiyama Shrine — the ichinomiya of old Tsugaru Province — at its southeastern foot. The mountain hosts the annual Oyama-sankei pilgrimage on the first day of the eighth lunar month. Hikers can climb via the Hyakuzawa, Dake, Akakura, and Nagahira trails, or take the Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline and Iwakisan lift to the ninth station for a short walk to the summit, which offers wide views over the Tsugaru Plain, the Sea of Japan, and the Shirakami range.
