Mount Higashi-Akaishi

Mount Higashi-Akaishi is a 1,710 m peak straddling Niihama City and Shikokuchūō City in Ehime Prefecture, the highest summit of the Hōō Range in the Shikoku mountains. The summit ridge is a tumble of bare peridotite outcrops weathered to a rust-red oxidized colour — the very feature that gave the mountain its name ("Eastern Red-Stone Mountain"). Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan, the Hana no Hyakumeizan, and the Shikoku Hyakumeizan, it is celebrated as a flower mountain: the endemic Otome-shajin and species such as Takane-bara and Komets-tsutsuji line the rocky crest. The standard ascents climb from the Ikadazu and Seba trailheads in Besshi-yama, Niihama, with a longer traverse linking Higashi-Akaishi, Nishi-Akaishi, and Monozumi-no-tō also popular. The Niihama Besshi-yama community bus provides access from Niihama Station, and Maintopia Besshi's onsen below offers a post-climb soak.
