Mount Handō

Mount Handō is a 664.2 m mountain in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, revered since medieval times as the “Omine of Omi,” a centre of mountain ascetic practice. Hando Shrine near the summit is traditionally traced to the Nara period, while its brightly painted Edo-period main hall is a National Important Cultural Property. Ascetic training sites, unusual rocks and peep cliffs remain along the ridge, where Oda Nobunaga is said to have surveyed the surrounding country. The mountain is also known as a training ground associated with Koka ninja traditions.
