Nikkōyama

日向山

Nikkōyama (about 223 m) is a mountain in Rittō, Shiga Prefecture, crowned by the ruins of the Sengoku-era Takiyama Castle. Its gate and stone walls, attributed to the Oda–Toyotomi era, are noted as early forms leading to early-modern castle design. A staircase of 721 stone steps leads to the summit, where a Hachidai-Ryūō shrine stands and views open over Rittō, the Yasu River, and the Konan plain. It is featured in the "70 Mountain Castles of Ōmi."
