Shiroyama, also known as Mount Ariko, has the ruins of Arikoyama Castle, built by Yamana Suketoyo in 1574, on its summit. Stone walls, enclosures and defensive ditches remain, overlooking Izushi’s castle town. The steep route from Arikoyama Inari Shrine takes about 40 minutes for strong walkers; the gentler path from Ajiyama Pass takes about 90 minutes. A sea of clouds can appear on autumn and winter mornings when conditions are right.
