A hut at 1,400m, about 80 minutes' walk up the Hidarimata forest road from Shinhotaka Onsen, ringed by old-growth beech forest and the clear water of the Hidarimata valley. Spring water from the beech woods runs right in front of the door, and vegetables and fruit sit cooling in a tank. This is the trailhead of the Koike-shindo, the route on to Sugorokudake, Kasagatake, Kurobegoro, Yarigatake, Washibadake and Kumonotaira, so many people spend the night before heading for the ridge here — while others come simply for the walk, with Wasabidaira itself as the destination. A toilet block and washroom built new in 2018, a drying room, private rooms and semi-private bunk beds are all here, along with something rare in the mountains: a bath. It sleeps 65 and has thirty tent pitches. The beech leaves turn in mid-October, burying the path in fallen leaves — a fine time, when the higher peaks take their first snow.
