Oren hut
オーレン小屋
2,330 m · Chino, Nagano · 1.0 km from the summit of Akaiwa-no-Atama
Mountain hut at 2,330m near the centre of the Yatsugatake range, about twenty minutes west of Natsuzawa Pass. With its wood stove and cypress bath looking out over the mountains it keeps an old-fashioned feel, and the surroundings offer both the crags and alpine flowers of the southern Yatsugatake and the quiet primeval forest and moss woods of the north. The nearest trailhead, Sakuradaira, is only about an hour and twenty minutes away, which makes it easy to leave your pack here and make a light round of Io-dake, Tengudake and Yokodake. In front of the hut is the source of the Natsuzawa, a spring that never runs dry, and its water feeds the cypress bath the hut is known for. Dinner is the local speciality of horsemeat sukiyaki, and borscht is the favourite at lunchtime. It sleeps 80 in private and shared rooms, and the campsite for up to 100 tents needs no reservation. Beginners, families, students and older walkers all use it.
2026: open April 25–November 1 · reservation required · sleeps 80
