Mt. Kyōga (1,076 m) is the highest peak of the Tara Range, straddling the border of Kashima City and Tara Town in Saga and Ōmura City in Nagasaki, and the highest summit in Saga Prefecture. It rises on the rim of an explosion crater of the Tara volcano, with a narrow horn-blende andesite summit, and the surrounding range was designated Tara-dake Prefectural Natural Park in 1952. From the top, hikers look out over Mt. Tara, Mt. Gokahara, Ōmura Bay, and—on clear days—Mt. Unzen. Counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Kyūshū and the Highest Peaks of Each Prefecture, it is reached in about two and a half hours from the Okuhiradani Campground trailhead, drawing crowds for its witch-hazel, rhododendron, and autumn foliage.
