Mount Oakan

Mount Oakan is a 1,370.4-meter andesitic stratovolcano rising on the eastern shore of Lake Akan in Akan-cho, Kushiro City, Hokkaido. A post-caldera volcano of the Akan Caldera, it began activity more than 13,000 years ago, although the exact date is unknown, and was added to Japan's list of active volcanoes in 2011. Known in Ainu as Pinneshir, the "male mountain," it lies within Akan-Mashu National Park and is climbed by a single steep trail that starts at the outflow of Lake Akan.
