Mount Nipesotsu is a 2,012.88 m peak in Hokkaidō's eastern Daisetsu region, with the sharp summit straddling Kamishihoro and Shintoku towns. The easternmost two-thousand-metre peak in Japan, it sits within Daisetsuzan National Park. Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan and the Hokkaidō Hyakumeizan, the mountain's striking pyramidal silhouette led Fukada Kyūya to remark in later years that it should have been included in his Hyakumeizan—earning it the nickname "phantom Hyakumeizan." The Ainu-derived name refers to a place where the inner bark of Japanese linden trees grows abundantly. Two trails approach from the Kamishihoro side: the Jūroku-no-sawa route remains closed because of long-term forest-road damage, leaving the Horoka Onsen route via Mae-Tengu-dake as the primary active line. The practical climbing season runs from early June to early October.
