Mount Nakama-Tonohata

Mount Nakama-Tonohata is a 991 m peak straddling Yamakuni-machi and Yabakei-machi in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. It has been a sacred place for venerating distant Mount Hiko since before the Kamakura period, with prayers for abundant harvests and the wellbeing of cattle. The name reportedly comes from the medieval Nakama clan that enshrined the Eight Great Dragon Kings and Benzaiten at its summit. The trail starts from the innermost trailhead in the Iwabushi area of Yamakuni-machi, crosses forest roads to the ridge, passes a stand of Tsukushi rhododendron, and reaches the summit with views toward Mount Hiko. The peak is listed in the Ōita Hyakuzan and New Ōita Hyakuzan.
