Mount Kushigata
櫛形山
Fujikawa, Yamanashi / Minami-Alps, Yamanashi · Elevation 2,052 m
Mount Kushigata is a 2,052 m mountain straddling Minami-Alps City and Fujikawa Town (Minamikoma District) in Yamanashi Prefecture, rising as a long, gentle ridge on the western edge of the Kōfu Basin in front of the South Japanese Alps. The name evokes the silhouette of an inverted comb (kushi), and the highest point is called Oku-senjū. Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan, the Shin Hana no Hyakumeizan, and the Yamanashi Hyakumeizan, the mountain is famous for the alpine meadows of Ayame-daira and Hadaka-yama at around 1,900 m, once called the largest iris field in Asia with thirty million plants — depleted by deer browsing but now recovering through active management. The main trails climb from the Ike-no-Chaya and Miharashi-daira trailheads on the Minami-Alps City side and from the prefectural forest above Fujikawa Town, offering easy ridge walking with sweeping views of Mount Fuji and the Shirane Sanzan.
