Mount Shōmugen (Komugen, 2,150 m) lies in the Tashiro district of Ikawa in Aoi Ward of Shizuoka City, forming the south-west forerunner of Mount Daimugen (2,330 m) in the deep southern Akaishi Range. The area falls within the Oku-Ōi Prefectural Natural Park, characterised by dense forest and gentle ridge crests well south of the Southern Alps National Park boundary. The standard route climbs from the Tashiro Lifelong Learning Hall on the north shore of Lake Ikawa, passing the Konomugen Hut to the summit. The Shizuoka prefectural grading places it at the most demanding level (physical 6 / technical E), warning that the ridge approaching Mount Shōmugen is severely eroded and dangerous, so a multi-day expedition with full equipment is required.
