Mount Kōjin

Mount Kōjin (Kōjin-dake) is a 1,260 m peak in central Nosegawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, lying within the northern reaches of Kōya-Ryūjin Quasi-National Park. Its summit is occupied by Tateri Kōjin Shrine—one of Japan's three great Kōjin shrines—said to have been founded around AD 800 by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) when he opened Mount Kōya, with its long stone stairway flanked by row upon row of white-wood torii gates. The mountain is also celebrated for its sweeping seas of cloud and is featured in lists such as the "1000 Mountains of Japan" and "Nara Hyakuyūzan."
