Mount Kawarake

土器山（八天山）

A roughly 430-meter sacred mountain in Jonohara, Kanzaki Town, Kanzaki City, Saga Prefecture, also known as Hattenzan. Its name ("earthenware mountain") derives from clay ritual vessels (haji-ki) tucked between the great boulders on its slopes; tradition holds that the priest Gyoki founded Hatten Shrine here in 721 CE, with upper, middle and lower halls arranged up the mountainside. The shrine enshrines the fire deity Kagutsuchi and the peak itself, and the mountain was once a centre of yamabushi ascetic practice. From Hatten Shrine, the trail climbs about 35 minutes to the middle hall, a further 15 to the upper hall, and three more minutes to the summit. The peak is included in the Saga Prefecture Mountain Guide (Bunken Tozan Guide).
