四里観音避難小屋

Unstaffed emergency shelter at about 1,800m in the Okuchichibu part of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, in Otaki, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture. Saitama Prefecture built it as a prefectural facility and its Chichibu Environmental Management Office looks after it. It stands partway along the Hakutaisan route linking Tochimoto with Jumonji Pass, and appears together with the Hakutaisan shelter on the prefecture's national park trail map. The hut takes its name from the Shiri Kannon that stands beside it. Jumonji Pass, linking the old provinces of Bushu and Shinshu, was an important road midway between Usui Pass and Hakone, and its milepost Kannon figures were erected in 1864 by supporters from Tochimoto in Bushu and Azusayama and Ikura in Shinshu — four on the Bushu side and one on the Shinshu side, one every ri (about 3.9km). They watched over the safety of pilgrims bound for Mitsumine and Zenkoji and served as distance markers, and are now a designated tangible folk cultural property of Chichibu City. The ridge the route follows carries Hakutaisan (1,794m), and westward it reaches Jumonji Pass (2,035m). Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park was designated on 10 July 1950 and covers 34,411.0 hectares.
