Toshimaen Indoor Ski Area Closed
Official name 豊島園インドアスキー場
Tokyo
Opened in 1958
Toshimaen Indoor Ski Area opened in November 1958 inside the Toshimaen amusement park in Nerima, Tokyo, and is described as the world's first indoor ski slope. A dome-shaped children's theatre in the park was converted, with a slope covered daily with crushed manufactured ice that skied like corn snow. Small as it was, it let Tokyo residents ski regardless of the weather, and the Seibu group followed it a year later with the larger Sayama indoor slope. Toshimaen itself closed in August 2020, and the grounds now hold a park and a studio tour attraction.
