Mt. Usugamine

Usuga-mine is a 265 m hill on the border of Himi City (Toyama) and Hōdatsushimizu Town (Ishikawa), part of the Hōdatsu hills. Its name comes from its resemblance to an overturned mortar (usu) when seen from the Shio side. It crowns the historic Usugamine-ōrai pass — chosen among Japan's "100 Historic Roads" — said to have been crossed by Ōtomo no Yakamochi and the priest Shinran; a stone monument to Yakamochi's poem stands at the top, which commands views of the Tateyama range, the Noto coast and Nanao Bay. It appears in the guide "Mountains of Ishikawa."
