Mt. Tennō
天王山
Ōyamazaki-chō, Kyoto · Elevation 270 m
Mt. Tennō is a 270 m peak in Ōyamazaki, Otokuni District, Kyoto Prefecture, overlooking the confluence of the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers and marking the historical boundary of Yamashiro and Settsu provinces. It is famous as the setting of the 1582 Battle of Yamazaki, in which Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Akechi Mitsuhide — giving rise to the Japanese idiom "the Tennōzan of fate" for any decisive turning point. The maintained loop trail from Hankyū/JR Yamazaki Station passes Sakatoke Shrine, the ruins of Yamazaki Castle and the Hatatate-matsu viewpoint, reaching the summit in about an hour. Listed in the Osaka and Kyoto prefectural mountain guides.
