Matsuosan is a 315.1 m peak on the boundary of Yamato-Kōriyama City and Ikaruga Town in Nara Prefecture, at the southern end of the Yata Hills. On its slopes stands Matsuodera, a Shingon temple founded in 718 by Prince Toneri to pray for the safe completion of the Nihon Shoki and his own forty-second-year protection rite—revered as Japan's oldest temple for warding off misfortune (yakuyoke). The Main Hall is a National Important Cultural Property, and the temple is also known for its May rose garden and Casablanca lilies in late June. The summit itself has limited views, but a ten-minute walk north reaches Kunimidai, with sweeping outlooks over the Nara Basin. The peak appears in the Nara Prefecture climbing guide, Nara Hyakuyu-zan and the Osaka-Shūhen 250.
