Mt. Kunimiyama

国見山

Kunimiyama is a 244 m hill in the Inase district of Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture, on the east bank of the Kitakami River. The southern foot of the mountain was once home to one of northern Tōhoku's largest mid-Heian-era mountain temple complexes, said to have included 700 monks' quarters and 36 halls; the surviving Gokurakuji Temple and the Kunimiyama temple ruins are now a National Historic Site. From the Daihikaku observation hall on the summit hikers enjoy a panoramic view across the Kitakami Basin to the Ōu Mountains. The peak appears in the Iwate-no-Yama 150 and the Iwate prefectural climbing guide.
