A 496 m hill in Shimada City, Shizuoka, regarded as a sacred mountain because of the Tendai temple Chimanji that sits part-way up its slopes. Chimanji was founded between 767 and 770 by Kōchi, a grand-disciple of Ganjin, and was patronised by Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu; its main hall is a National Important Cultural Property, and the temple grounds shelter the famous "Ten Cedars of Chimanji," trees thought to be over a thousand years old. Two pilgrim paths—Ita Chōbutsu and Ogawa Chōbutsu—climb from the foot of the mountain past 33 stone Buddhas to the temple, and the nearby Dōdanbara meadow becomes a sea of dodantsutsuji blossom in spring and red foliage in autumn.
