Mount Washi

A 322-meter rocky peak straddling the border of Takamatsu and Sakaide cities in Kagawa Prefecture. Tradition holds that the Nara-period Chinese monk Ganjin gave the mountain its name after noting its likeness to Mount Gridhrakuta (Vulture Peak) in India; the temple he founded at its foot, Jubuji, remains as an inner sanctuary of Negoroji, the eighty-second temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The hill is composed of high-quality hornblende andesite, supplying stone for sarcophagi in the Kofun period and lanterns and tombstones since the Meiji era as the source of "Washinoyama Stoneware." It is included in the Kagawa Prefecture Mountain Guide (Bunken Tozan Guide).
