Mount Tengu

Mount Tengu is a 612 m peak in Iide, Nishi-Okitama District, Yamagata, distinguished by a rocky pinnacle that juts out like a tengu's nose. It has long served as a Shugendo training site and is also known as the inner sanctuary of Nikko Furumine Shrine. Along the climb stand a child-rearing Jizo, a goma ritual hall, Raijin Gongen and the small Mikazuki Fudo waterfall, whose waters are traditionally believed to relieve eye ailments. The annual grand festival takes place on 23 July, and the summit overlooks the Asahi and Iide ranges.
