Mount Kurinodake in western Kirishima is an old volcano formed around 200,000 years ago. A route starts beside Kirishima Open-Air Museum, climbs railway-sleeper steps and passes through maple and oak woodland to the summit. Views include Karakunidake and Shiratoriyama, with colorful foliage in autumn. The Hachiman Daijigoku fumaroles on the mountainside supply Kurinodake’s hot springs.
