Mount Iwama is a 443 m sacred mountain in Otsu, Shiga, near the Uji border, with Iwamasan Shoho-ji (Iwama-dera), the twelfth temple of the Saikoku pilgrimage, on its slopes. Founded in 722 by Taicho, who opened Mount Hakusan, the temple was an imperial foundation rewarding his prayers for Empress Gensho’s recovery. Its Thousand-Armed Kannon is revered as the sweating Kannon, said to return perspiring after rescuing suffering souls in hell each night, and as a protector against lightning. The grounds preserve Basho Pond, where Matsuo Basho is said to have composed his famous frog-and-old-pond haiku.
